Diabetes

An estimated 1 in 20 Australians are living with diagnosed diabetes, making it one of the fastest growing chronic health conditions. This emphasises the importance of early dietary and lifestyle interventions to help prevent and manage diabetes complications.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder that is characterised by high blood glucose (sugar) levels in the body known as hyperglycaemia.

When food is eaten containing carbohydrates (sugar and starch), the sugar or “glucose” is broken down and then passed into our bloodstream. All our body cells need sugar to provide us with energy, and to do this the body must pass this sugar into the body tissues such as the muscle and brain. For this to occur we need the help of Insulin a hormone located in the pancreas which helps us to regulate our blood sugar levels.

However, in diabetes there is either not enough production of insulin, or the insulin is not as effective. With not enough insulin, sugar (or glucose) builds up in our blood causing high blood sugar levels.
