Our Diabetes Education Service can offer advice and support on the following:
- Basic lifestyle advice including healthy eating and exercise
- Education sessions for adults and their families newly diagnosed with diabetes including short-term and long-term complications
- Plan individual blood glucose monitoring regimens to assist those with diabetes based on their lifestyle and medication management
- Demonstrate how to use a blood glucose monitoring machine, test strips and lancet devices to measure blood glucose levels and provide a blood glucose monitoring diary
- Educate people with diabetes and their families on how to identify and treat hypoglycaemia
- Educate people with diabetes and their families on how to prevent, identify and treat hyperglycaemia including sick day management plans and managing sick days
- Initiate referral to another healthcare professional such as a general practitioner, dietitian or podiatrist
- Demonstrate how to safely inject, store and dispose of insulin injections and consumables
- Provide advice on different diabetes medication including doses, administration, side effects, monitoring and when referral may be required
- Recommend medication changes and optimisation in conjunction with your general pr or prescriber
- Assist those with gestational diabetes to manage their medications and lifestyle throughout their pregnancy
